Typical Heartburn Causes You Should Know

Posted by admin

We know that heartburn is a very uncomfortable feeling caused by digestive acids that go from your esophagus up to your throat making it feel like burning.  The question here is, what are these heartburn causes and where are they coming from?

Heartburn usually presents after meals when you eat to much, when lying down and at night when you are sleeping and it is caused by a faulty muscle in the stomach. The stomach has a flap that prevents food from going back up to the esophagus, when it doesn’t work fine heartburn appears. It is also known as a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).  The flap is like a valve called “Lower Esophageal Sphincter” (LES) and it controls the opening between the esophagus and the stomach and as said previously it prevents food an digestive acids from returning back.

There are several things that causes heartburn, eating big meals is one of them specially if the food is spicy, when your stomach is full and starts producing digestive acids it receives a lot of pressure and tries to take it away, if the stomach flap is not working well it will let the digestive acids go back to the esophagus and to your throat. It is not a good idea to eat fried, fatty and greasy foods, they are hard for the stomach to digest.

Drinking too much alcoholic beverages will also make you have heartburn, alcohol makes the body to produce many acids and irritates the esophagus.  If you smoke there is a possibility that the nicotine will trigger the heartburn discomfort.  Being overweight also puts pressure in your abdomen and stomach, the same happens during pregnancy.

So lets make a resume of the causes that can trigger heartburn: eating too much, alcoholic beverages, smoking, pregnancy or being overweight, going to sleep right after having a meal.

All of these heartburn causes can be minimized by taking the right steps which is reducing the intakes and activities that are causing you the discomfort, it will be eating less quantity of food, lower the ingestion of alcoholic beverages, not smoking before and while you eat, etc.
